If you’ve never been to Joshua Tree National Park, what on earth are you waiting for? This phenomenal camping destination in southern California promises a unique desert experience with its striking landscapes, fascinating flora, and clear night skies perfect for stargazing. Here’s what you need to know about visiting this fabulous National Park in your new or used RV!
About the Park
The park is full of Joshua trees, of course! These iconic trees, with their twisted branches and spiky leaves, are the crazy cousin of the yucca tree family, the park’s namesake, and a symbol of the Mojave Desert.
Visitors can admire these unique plants throughout the park, especially in the higher elevation areas. It’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a Dr. Seuss book – it’s impossible not to smile! But the Joshua tree is no joke. It’s actually been used for thousands of years: the seeds and flowers for food, and its leaves for sandal making and basket weaving.
You’ll also be blown away by the rock formations! Joshua Tree is renowned for its surreal rock formations, created by the gradual erosion of granite monoliths over earth’s history. Popular formations for rock climbing, bouldering, and hiking include Hidden Valley, Barker Dam, and Skull Rock.
You also won’t want to miss the Cholla Cactus Garden. Located in the Pinto Basin, this serene desert garden showcases dense clusters of cholla cacti, also known as “teddy bear” cacti for their deceptively fuzzy appearance. Visitors can take a short walk through the garden and admire these delightfully unreal cacti!
And if you really want the best of the best views, get your panoramic photos in at Keys View. You’ll have outstanding vantage points of the Coachella Valley, Salton Sea, and San Andreas Fault. It’s especially breathtaking during sunrise or sunset!
